Our Festival: Qingming | Spring’s Gentle Breeze and Bright Scenery—Remembering the Departed

Spring rain nourishes the greenery, and the air is crisp while the scenery is bright; when the Twenty-Four Solar Terms coincide with a traditional festival, Qingming seamlessly blends the vibrant beauty of spring with the enduring ache of longing. As the only day that embodies both solar-term and festival attributes, Qingming celebrates the aesthetic harmony of the seasonal cycle while carrying deep cultural sentiment—offering the joy of outing to enjoy the blossoms and the solemnity of remembering the departed and cherishing those far away.
During the Qingming Festival, all things shed the old and embrace the new, and the天地 (heaven and earth) present a scene of crisp clarity and pristine beauty. The seasonal changes unfold in orderly fashion, each bearing its own unique charm: the first hou marks the beginning of the paulownia blossoms, as the flowers quietly unfurl, adorning the trees with an elegant, refined grace; the second hou sees field mice transforming into quails, as the warm sun bathes the fields in radiant light and infuses them with vibrant life; and the third hou heralds the appearance of rainbows, for after the rain the sky clears to reveal a brilliant arc stretching high above, fully capturing the lively spirit of spring.
From tomb-sweeping and ancestor worship to spring outings and willow-branch decorating, from eating green rice balls to flying kites, these millennia-old customs have been passed down through the generations, imbuing this solar term with both the poetic charm of a serene, bright spring and the heartfelt warmth of remembering loved ones—making it a seasonal mark etched deep in the Chinese soul.
As the spring breeze gently caresses the land, the gardens of the Jin Capital are awash in a dazzling bloom—truly the perfect time for an outing to enjoy the blossoms. We invite you to wander among the flowers and savor this splendid spring feast.
Within the garden, peach and plum blossoms vie in splendor, crabapple buds unfurl, and forsythia bursts into full bloom; willow branches gently caress the emerald waters, while profuse flowers and lush greenery complement one another in a charming harmony, offering a poetic and picturesque scene at every step. Strolling along the garden paths, one can watch bees and butterflies flitting about, inhale the delicate fragrance of blossoms, and feel the tender caress of the spring breeze—letting go of fatigue amidst nature’s beauty and fully savoring the leisurely ease of the Qingming holiday, truly making the most of this splendid spring season.
During the Qingming Festival, we honor and commemorate our forebears. To carry forward the spirit of patriotism and cultivate a deep sense of devotion to family and country, we will be organizing “Our Festival—” during the Qingming holiday. Qingming —A themed event titled “Remembering the Sages and Expressing Our Remembrance,” which takes participants to Gu Garden in Quwo to pay tribute to the eminent scholar Gu Yanwu.
During the event, docents will guide you through a detailed exploration of Mr. Gu Yanwu’s life and achievements, as well as his profound patriotic spirit, illuminating the enduring significance of the motto “The rise and fall of the nation is the responsibility of every citizen.” At Tinglin Square, participants are invited to lay flowers and bow solemnly in respectful tribute to this great predecessor, thereby reflecting on the weight of civic and national responsibility and carrying forward the spirit of patriotism.

1. Practice civilized sightseeing and cherish the scenic beauty. Please take good care of the gardens’ flowers, plants, and trees: do not pick or break flower branches, do not trample on the lawns, and do not litter. Let us work together to maintain a clean and beautiful park environment, and enjoy the flowers and scenery in a courteous and respectful manner.
2. Promote civilized mourning practices—fire prevention comes first. Within the entire premises of Jinyuan, Jiangyuan, and Guyuan, the burning of joss paper, the lighting of incense and candles, and the setting off of fireworks and firecrackers are strictly prohibited. All sources of ignition are banned from entering the parks. We encourage green and civilized ways of remembrance, such as offering flowers and bowing, to help prevent fire hazards.
3. Ensure safety and order by staggering your visit times. During the holiday, visitor numbers will be high; please follow the guidance of on-site staff, participate in activities and view the flowers in an orderly manner, keep elderly family members and children under close supervision, safeguard your personal belongings, and enjoy a safe and pleasant holiday.
