As the “ancient capital of Jin and the cradle of the Three Jins,” Quwo boasts a long history and a profound cultural heritage. The century-long hegemony of the State of Jin in bygone days fostered a vibrant intellectual renaissance during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, making Quwo the cradle that nurtured China’s finest traditional culture. More than two thousand years ago, Duke Wen of Jin, who once dominated the Central Plains, launched from this very place a glorious era of hegemony that lasted for a century and a half, thereby establishing the State of Jin’s historic preeminence: “No power under heaven could rival it.” During the May Day holiday, let us follow the guide into Jin Garden and the Duke Wen of Jin Exhibition Hall to explore the origins of the Three Jins.

Route Planning:
Jiangyuan → Xue Family Courtyard → Yinggan Temple Pagoda → Four-arched Gate → Jinyuan → Guyuan
The Xue Family Courtyard is located at No. 10 West City Alley, Xijie Village, Lechang Town, Quwo County. Built during the Qing Dynasty, the complex features a regular rectangular layout, with buildings arranged along a central axis from south to north: the southern wing, the entrance hall, the hall’s upper level, and the northern main building, flanked on either side by east and west annexes. The entire courtyard is harmoniously staggered and exudes an antique, elegant charm, making it a quintessential example of residential architecture in southern Shanxi during the Qing era. It was designated as a provincial-level key cultural relic protection unit in June 2004 and as a national-level cultural relic protection unit in 2019.
The brick pagoda of Yingshang Temple, also known as the West Temple Pagoda, was first constructed in the fifth year of the Dading era of the Jin dynasty. The pagoda comprises twelve stories and exemplifies the densely eaved style that was prevalent in northern China during the Liao and Jin periods. Its plan is an octagonal hollow structure, with a dignified, imposing, and majestic form that commands great admiration. It embodies the quintessential aesthetic of ancient northern Chinese pagodas. In the seventh year of the Dade era of the Yuan dynasty, an earthquake caused the collapse of the top four stories, leaving the remaining body split in two from the second story upward; hence its alternate name, “the Split Pagoda.” Since its construction over 800 years ago, the Yingshang Temple Pagoda has retained eight stories and stands 35 meters tall. Its distinctive split has persisted for more than 700 years, and it is now designated as a provincial key cultural relic protection site.
Gu Garden is located on Jixiang South Road in the Eastern New District of Quwo County, and was established to commemorate the renowned scholar Gu Yanwu. The garden’s architecture seamlessly blends northern and southern styles, with vibrant flowers, lush willows, pavilions and terraces, quaint bridges over flowing streams, and time-honored, antique charm. The elegant Hui-style buildings, with their blue-tiled roofs and white walls, are thoughtfully arranged, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene reminiscent of the water towns of Jiangnan.
During the 25 years that Gu Yanwu spent traveling and studying in the north, he visited Quwo on numerous occasions and there completed his monumental work, “Rizhilu,” while also famously proclaiming the patriotic maxim: “The rise and fall of the nation is the responsibility of every commoner.”
To inherit and carry forward China’s fine traditional culture, Gu Garden is offering a study-and-exploration program during the May Day holiday themed around “Carrying Forward the Spirit of Tinglin and Cultivating Patriotic Sentiments,” focusing on the thoughts of Gu Yanwu. We look forward to your participation.
